The Heart of the Circular Economy: A Social-Operational Partnership with Hong Chi Association

As ReCube expanded, one challenge became critical: how to centrally process tens of thousands of returned containers daily to the highest hygiene standards, while staying true to our mission of creating positive social value. A purely commercial laundry would solve the superficial issue but would not encompass the heart of ReCube for social betterment.
Simultaneously, the Hong Chi Association, a leading non-profit serving people with intellectual disabilities, sought meaningful, stable, and skill-building employment opportunities for its members—a challenge in Hong Kong’s competitive job market

Instead of viewing these as two separate challenges, ReCube and Hong Chi Association formed a strategic partnership in co-creating a professional-grade washing facility where social empowerment powers environmental sustainability.
Together, we designed a step-by-step workflow suited to Hong Chi’s members: sorting, pre-rinsing, operating industrial dishwashers, and quality control. Each member masters their role and takes genuine pride in their work.
ReCube provides a steady flow of returned containers; Hong Chi provides a trained, professional workforce. The model was featured on TVB News Magazine (新聞透視) — proof that a business can embed social empowerment at the heart of an environmental mission.

The partnership has created 22 stable, long-term jobs for members of the Hong Chi Association, providing them with valuable skills and financial independence.

In its first year, the team contributed over 6,000 working hours. They processed hundreds of thousands of reusable containers and formed the critical logistical backbone of ReCube’s entire city-wide operation.

Service: Fully-Managed, Large-Scale Reusable Tableware Infrastructure

With a daily population of over 30,000 students and staff spread across a vast campus, CUHK faced a monumental waste management challenge. The university’s commitment to sustainability was being undermined by the sheer volume of single-use takeaway containers generated daily from its numerous canteens and cafes. During peak lunch hours alone, tens of thousands of disposable items were used and discarded, creating overflowing bins, increasing cleaning workloads, and contradicting the environmental education being taught in its lecture halls. CUHK needed a robust, scalable, and user-friendly system that could integrate seamlessly into the fast-paced campus life and make sustainability a practical reality for everyone.
ReCube partnered with CUHK’s management and campus service units to deploy a multi-phased, comprehensive circular economy infrastructure—the largest of its kind in a Hong Kong university. Using a simple deposit-return model via Octopus Card, students and staff could easily borrow and return ReCube containers. The success of the pilot led to a campus-wide expansion, covering the majority of food and beverage outlets. The system was designed to be agile. The same pool of ReCube containers was extended to support major university events, such as orientation camps (O-camps), information days, and student-led activities, transforming them into zero-waste functions and embedding a culture of reuse from a student’s very first day at university.

The program has achieved an average adoption rate of 25% across participating canteens.

Over 1.5 million single-use items are successfully reduced on campus each year.

It is estimated to save cleaning contractors more than 3,000 hours of labor costs annually.

Service: Fully Managed Reusable Tableware System, Sustainability Partnership
MHA’s Cheers Gallery is a prominent social enterprise that operates canteens and retail outlets, providing vocational training and employment for individuals in mental health recovery. As a participant in the government’s “BYOC Eateries” scheme and a subject of an HKPC feature story on sustainability, Cheers Gallery was committed to environmental responsibility. However, they faced a “sustainability gap”: while encouraging customers to bring their own containers, a significant number of daily patrons still required single-use takeaway items. This not only generated waste, contradicting their green image, but also added operational complexity and cost, distracting from their core social mission of supporting their employees and serving the community.
ReCube implemented our deposit-return system at their canteen locations. This provided a convenient, sustainable alternative for customers who forgot their own containers, effectively eliminating the need for disposables. ReCube managed the entire lifecycle of the tableware—from supplying clean, sanitized cups and bowls to handling daily collection and professional washing. This removed the entire operational burden from Cheers Gallery’s staff, allowing them to focus on their primary roles in food service and peer support. Recognizing the success of the daily operations, the partnership deepened. ReCube referring MHA to manage the tableware for internal events and for external partners’ functions. This transformed MHA from just a client into an active advocate for waste reduction.

Activity: Campus Canteen Operations for a Major Chain
Service: Fully-Managed Reusable System for High-Volume, Fast-Paced Environments

Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), committed to its “whole-person education” philosophy, aimed to embed sustainability deeply into campus life. However, a significant obstacle stood in the way: the high volume of waste generated by its most popular canteens. The campus branch of Café de Coral (大家樂), Hong Kong’s leading fast-food chain, was central to this challenge. Their business model is built on speed, efficiency, and standardization, which traditionally relies heavily on single-use packaging to serve hundreds of students in short peak-hour windows. HKBU needed a solution that wouldn’t disrupt Café de Coral’s proven operational flow, while students demanded a system that was just as fast and convenient as disposables.
ReCube deployed a targeted solution designed to integrate seamlessly into Café de Coral’s high-speed workflow, proving that sustainability and commercial efficiency can coexist. We treated ReCube containers as just another serving option. Café de Coral’s frontline staff did not have to change their core food preparation or serving process. They simply placed the food into a ReCube bowl instead of a disposable one, preserving their service speed. All complex logistics—collection, transport, professional washing, and restocking—were fully managed by ReCube. For students, this “tap-and-go” process took less than 10 seconds, ensuring no delays during busy lunch hours. Conveniently located return stations across campus made returning the container effortless.

The system maintained service speed, with an average transaction time of under 10 seconds for a student to borrow a ReCube container, proving its viability in a fast-food setting

In its first year of operation, the program at this single high-volume outlet successfully prevented over 20,000 sets of single-use containers and cutlery from entering landfills.

Cultivating Sustainability: A Campus-Wide Circular Model with Bijas
Bijas, a popular vegetarian canteen and social enterprise at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), is a leader in promoting healthy, sustainable lifestyles. As an official “BYOC Eatery,” they actively encourage waste reduction. However, they faced a significant operational dilemma: the fast-paced university environment meant many students and staff, despite their good intentions, would forget their personal containers and require disposable takeaway options. This created a stark contradiction—a “green” vegetarian SE generating a high volume of single-use plastic waste, undermining its core mission and creating a constant visual reminder of waste on campus.
ReCube partnered with Bijas to develop a tailored solution that bridged the gap between convenience and sustainability, perfectly suited for the dynamic university environment. We introduced our easy-to-use deposit-return system directly within the canteen. Students and staff could instantly get a ReCube container for a small, refundable deposit, eliminating hesitation and making the sustainable choice as easy as the disposable one. The success of the daily system built immense trust. They began referring our services to other HKU departments and student societies for their events, extending the waste-reduction impact far beyond the canteen’s four walls.

In the participating canteens, the average utilization rate reached 25%.

Activity: Veg Asia 2025 Public Exhibition
Service: Large-Scale Reusable Tableware Deposit & Return System

Veg Asia is one of Asia’s most significant plant-based lifestyle exhibitions, attracting thousands of environmentally-conscious consumers. For its 2025 edition, a partnership with Greenpeace amplified its commitment to sustainability. However, this created a critical operational challenge: a food and beverage-heavy expo of this scale typically generates tens of thousands of single-use items (sample cups, tasting plates, cutlery), creating massive landfill waste. This practice directly contradicted the core message of the event and risked undermining the credibility of the organizers, exhibitors, and its partner, Greenpeace, in front of their target audience. They needed a robust, user-friendly solution to eliminate single-use plastics and truly “walk the talk.”
ReCube designed a public exhibition. Visitors used their ReCube tableware across all participating food and beverage booths. The system was designed to be intuitive, requiring minimal change to the vendors’ service flow. Clear signage and on-site ambassadors guided visitors throughout the venue. ReCube managed the entire end-to-end logistics. All collected items were then transported to our facility for professional, high-temperature washing and sanitization, ensuring hygiene and preparing them for the next event, thus closing the loop on a circular economy model.

An estimated 4,500 + single-use plastic and paper items were avoided over the 3-day exhibition period, preventing a significant volume of waste from entering landfills.

How ReCube Set a New Green Standard for a Traditional Poon Choi Feast
The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG) hosts an annual Poon Choi Feast, a large-scale community event that brings together thousands of participants for a traditional celebration. While fostering community spirit, the event faced a significant environmental challenge: the massive amount of single-use waste. Serving thousands of people traditionally meant using thousands of disposable bowls, cups, and cutlery sets, which would end up in landfills after just one use. HKFYG sought a sustainable solution that would not compromise the event’s convenience, hygiene, or festive atmosphere.
ReCube supplied durable, food-grade reusable bowls suitable for the hot and saucy nature of Poon Choi, along with reusable cups and cutlery for all attendees. ReCube managed all logistics, from delivering the clean tableware before the event to collecting the used items afterward. All collected items were then transported to our professional facility for high-temperature washing and sanitization, meeting strict food safety standards.

82% of attendees successfully participated in the return program, demonstrating the ease and effectiveness of our on-site system.

Driving Sustainability at the National Games: A Zero-Plastic Hydration Solution for the Golf Tournament

The National Games is one of China’s most prestigious sporting events. For the golf tournament, organizers were committed to the “Green National Games” (綠色全運) vision. However, hosting thousands of athletes and spectators over four days under the sun presents a massive hydration challenge. The standard solution—distributing tens of thousands of single-use plastic water bottles—would directly contradict the event’s sustainability goals, creating a huge waste footprint and undermining the “green” message. They needed a practical, large-scale solution to provide water conveniently without the plastic waste.
In partnership with water station provider WELL井(HK), ReCube deployed a comprehensive and seamless zero-waste hydration system. ReCube supplied durable, easy-to-carry reusable bottles for athletes and attendees. WELL井 strategically placed their water refill stations , ensuring that a source of fresh, cool water was always within easy reach. This integrated system made refilling a bottle faster and easier than finding and disposing of a plastic one. It provided a premium experience that perfectly aligned with the high standards of the National Games.

How ReCube Powered a Waste-Free & Walk-Friendly Halloween Party for Ocean Park’s Staff

For its exclusive staff preview of the famous Halloween festivities, Ocean Park needed a F&B solution that matched its world-class standards. The goal was to create a relaxed party atmosphere where staff could freely walk, mingle, and enjoy the attractions. Using standard disposable tableware would not only generate a huge amount of waste—contradicting Ocean Park’s conservation mission—but the flimsy cups and plates are inconvenient and prone to spills, hindering the guest experience.
As a trusted partner for two consecutive years, ReCube provided a full-service solution. We set up a dedicated ReCube booth that served as a central hub for distributing and collecting our high-quality reusable cups. Our sturdy, easy-to-hold cups were perfect for the walk-around nature of the event, allowing staff to carry their drinks securely while exploring the park. This turnkey service meant Ocean Park’s team could focus on their staff, not on managing waste.
